French is taught to all students across all Key Stages at St Ambrose Barlow. Students study four lessons a fortnight in mixed ability groups. At the end of Year 8 students can choose to continue their study of French to GCSE level. Students are strongly advised to continue their study of languages to enable them to achieve the EBacc and thus enabling them to stand out against the crowd and enjoy a broad curriculum.

At Key Stage 4 students work towards the GCSE set out by AQA. At Key Stage 5, students can conintue their studies with Edexcel.

All language lessons are conducted as much as possible in the target language and include a variety of resources including text books, authentic materials, interactive activities, games and songs. We encourage pupils to be confident linguists, regardless of ability. Pupils are tested in four skill areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. We teach grammar and vocabulary in topics such as:

• Self and Family
• Leisure and Media
• Home town and environment
• Education and future career
• Tourism
