At St Ambrose Barlow we strive towards shaping assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who relish the challenge of maths. The children shall become independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills support them across the wider curriculum. Mathematics is integral to all aspects of life and, with this in mind; we endeavour to ensure that our pupils develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards Mathematics that will stay with them. The Mathematics curriculum equips pupils with a powerful set of skills to help them understand and change the world. These skills include making connections, logical reasoning, and the ability to think in abstract ways.
Key Stage 3
Pupils in years 7 and 8 follow a KS3 mastery curriculum designed to build confidence in mathematics and prepare pupils for the 9-1 GCSE. They will develop and extend skills learned at KS2 through a mix of mental and oral work, interactive teaching, problem solving and reasoning. Pupils are encouraged to explain their work and methods used. Elements of algebra, ratio and proportion, probability and statistics will be covered and linked together to allow pupils to see the bigger mathematical picture.
Key Stage 4
Pupils start KS4 in year 9 and follow a 3 year scheme designed specifically for Edexcel’s 9-1 GCSE in Mathematics specification. It builds on top of knowledge learnt in KS3, improves fluency and nurtures confidence. There is a focus on problem solving and reasoning throughout and adopts an innovative mastery approach to tackle the increase in demand at GCSE.
