Intent Statement

From Key Stage 3 pupils explore their creativity and imagination. We embed development of practical and critical skills and extend their knowledge and experience of a variety of materials, processes and practices. Pupils engage confidentiality with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures. They become more independent in using the visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings.
The structure and language of KS3 prepares pupils for GCSE. Pupils are provided with the opportunity to create artworks through the exploration and manipulation of multiple techniques and processes informed by a developing understanding of the work of artists from a variety of styles and traditions. The bespoke curriculum allows pupils to work to their specialism and preferred working style. Interventions and support are specific and targeted. Our links with a wide variety of creative industries and practitioners gives pupils opportunities to work with these professionals to develop their portfolios further. Trips, workshops and the international visit further extend learning opportunities and experiences to our pupils.

 

Year 7

During Key Stage 3 pupils develop their creativity and imagination through more sustained activities. These help them to build on and improve their practical and critical skills and to extend their knowledge and experience of materials, processes and practices. They engage confidentiality with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures. They become more independent in using the visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings. Pupils learn about art from other cultures, in addition to learning a variety of key skills.

Year 8

By the end of Key Stage 3 in Art and Design pupils should be able to respond imaginatively with appropriate skill and expressive control to a wide range of subjects. It is expected that pupils should be able to draw effectively and manipulate materials and processes in an organised way to realise their intentions. Pupils' ideas should be informed by knowledge and understanding of the work or artists and designers.

Equally, the historical and cultural aspects of Art and Design should be evident in Pupils' investigations. Pupils' personal development and research in Art and Design should be evident from their sketchbooks. Pupils learn about a variety of contemporary designers, architects and artists. Pupils develop art skills in both 2 and 3 dimensions.

Year 9

The Art courses at Key Stage 4 in Art and Design and Photography have been devised to continue pupil's personal artistic development through a dynamic combination of practical and theoretical study. Pupils learn about the broad area of Art, Craft and Design from many perspectives including Social Cultural and Historical aspects. Pupils also investigate a wide range of techniques and processes, informed by the activities of professional artists, photographers, designers and craft people. Ultimately this should lead to a very knowledgeable creative individual with excellent communicative and expressed skills.

The courses provide pupils with the opportunity to create artworks through the exploration and manipulation of paint, graphic materials, textiles, fashion, photography, sculpture and processes informed by a developing understanding of the work of artists from a variety of styles and traditions. The Art department has links with a wide variety of creative industries and practitioners. Pupils are given the opportunity to work with these practitioners throughout all of their projects.

Year 10

In Year 11 Pupils can continue this artistic development by investigating a wide range of different media and technique in the general Art and Design course. Alternatively,  pupils can specialise in a particular area during the painting and drawing course. Pupils work independently to develop their artworks. Pupils also take part in an international visit to extend their learning. Pupils visit places such as London, China and New York.
